The last thing you need to do is schedule cooling system service. But your HVAC is a quite intricate system, so it can be difficult to determine what’s causing the trouble on your own.

That’s why Schraer Heating & Air Conditioning made this handbook to help you see what could be happening with your home comfort system. Here, you’ll see some common explanations for why your space is feeling a little too warm. And even though some of these are straightforward] DIY projects, you may need to bring in a skilled technician for air conditioner repair.

And if you need us, Schraer Heating & Air Conditioning is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Warrenton.

1. Your Device Settings Are Off

Every home adjusts their thermostat a little differently to match their distinct preferences. However, a lot of people make the error of setting their thermostat to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” With this setting, the fan in your air conditioner will continue to push out air even when you’ve attained your set temperature.

This can seem like your vents are distributing warmish air, when in reality it’s just using the fan more frequently than necessary. Change this setting and see if things seem better.

2. Your Cooling System Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two main places to investigate for dirt or dust accumulation when your home comfort system doesn’t seem to be working well.

First, check out your system’s filter. If you don’t swap out your filter often enough, built-up dust can make it more difficult for air to move through and lower the temperature your home. If your filter is obviously dirty or dusty, it’s probably time to replace it. (And in general, you need to replace it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter is looking fine, go to your outside unit. Double check there’s adequate clearing around your air conditioner and clean up plants or litter stuck there. This piece of your system lets off the heat from your house. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be feeling cool indoors.

We advise setting professional air conditioner maintenance every year to keep your unit working smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the material that chills the air in your home. It cycles between your inside and outdoor system pieces to grab and let off heat, to help your home remain the right temperature. If there is an opening along the way, you won’t be feeling cool again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Indications of a refrigerant leak include a drop in conditioned air, pricier monthly charges, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises coming from your AC.

If you suspect refrigerant could be leaking, call Schraer Heating & Air Conditioning for air conditioner repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Need to Be Replaced

Your air conditioner is made up of a a handful of important parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any one of these is not working as it should, your home comfort is hurt.

Our Schraer Heating & Air Conditioning pros are well-trained and experienced in HVAC. They can help you locate and repair any trouble.

5. Your AC Has to Be Replaced

If your system is more than 10 years old, it could likely be a good time to look into new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it simply won’t work as well as it once did. And it may be making your home less comfortable.

If your HVAC unit is more current but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it might be the wrong size for your house. HVAC systems are not one-size-fits-all. An AC that’s too small just can’t help a place the way a correctly sized AC can.
